BOISE, Idaho (AP) - National wildfire experts are predicting a busy fire season for a belt of parched states in the southwest, but only minor flareups in northern states stretching from Washington to the Dakotas.

The National Interagency Fire Center released its annual wildfire forecast for the nation's western region on Friday. The report blames an acute case of La Nina for the drought conditions that have already fueled massive wildfires in Texas and New Mexico. Above-normal risk for fire potential is also predicted
for eastern Colorado, southern Arizona and parts of Hawaii and Kansas.

An off-year is projected for California thanks to abundant winter snow and spring rain. Experts are also forecasting a lower risk and delayed fire season for states in the Pacific Northwest, northern Rocky Mountains and northern plains.
